VIA RAIL - TRAIN TRANSPORTATION

The following services are provided to passengers with disabilities travelling by train:

People with speech or hearing impairments can call Via Rail’s TTY line - Reservia. TTY’s are also available at information counters at major train stations.

Seeing eye dogs are allowed anywhere on the train. Passengers with visual impairments travelling overnight are eligible for a roomette (a slightly larger sleeping compartment) for the price of a berth.

Passengers in wheelchairs can be manually lifted on and off trains.

When reserving tickets, passengers should make clear what service will be needed. The information will be put into your file and the train crew will be notified that you need assistance. Pre-boarding can also be requested.

Transcontinental trains (“Canadian”and “Skeena”) operating through BC are equipped with wheelchair tie downs and accessible washrooms. Local trains on Vancouver Island are not so equipped.

The travelling companion of a person with a disability can travel for free. A medical certificate is required. Both passengers require advance reservations. The companion is responsible for the care and personal needs of the person with a disability while en route.

Stretchers can be accommodated if advance notice is provided.
