SAFER provides direct cash assistance to eligible residents of BC age 60 and over who live in rental accommodations. To be eligible, the applicant must be 65 years of age or older and entitled to receive Canadian Old Age Security, or age 60 - 64 (Canadian citizen or landed immigrant) and have resided in Canada for 10 continuous years as an adult. As well, either applicant or spouse has resided in British Columbia for one year immediately prior to application. The applicant must be paying more than 30 percent of their total income for rent.
