EDUCATION, SKILLS & TRAINING, MINISTRY OF
Special Programs Branch
2nd Floor, 633 Courtney St.
Victoria, BC V8V 2M4

This branch works to enable the equitable participation of students with special needs in the school system of BC. The branch assists school districts in implementing programs for learners with special needs, and works with other ministries. It manages Provincial Resource Programs, which provide education services, through school boards, to learners in hospitals, treatment centres, and youth containment centres. Through SET-BC (Special Education Technology - BC) the Ministry offers technology and related support to students with physical disabilities and visual impairments. Through the Provincial Resource Center for the Visually Impaired (P.R.C.V.I) the Ministry provides Braille, audio materials, and technical aids for students with visual impairments. The Ministry also provides auditory training equipment for students who are hard of hearing. The branch sponsors a number of training initiatives for teachers and others and develops resource materials and services to support the participation of students with special needs. Contact your local school board for information on these services.

Post Secondary Education Division
Colleges and Program Planning
PO BOX 9177 Stn Prov Govt
Victoria BC V8W 9H8

BC's post-secondary institutions recognize the difficulties that students with disabilities may encounter. Most institutions have Disability Services Coordinators who assist students in organizing the programs, goods and services they need. The coordinator's title may vary from place to place. Check the college, university or institute calendar to find out whom you should speak with.
The coordinator can help you find the support you need, whether it is equipment, books or services, such as note-taking, sign language interpreting, or tutoring. Special programs are available at all colleges for students with disabilities who need specialized training.
If you are print impaired, you should know about the College and Institute Library Service (CILS). This is a clearing house for materials such as taped books. CILS does not do brailling, but can obtain Braille material for you. Talk to the Coordinator at your institution about using CILS.
For up-to-date information on other current funding initiatives available this year, contact the Coordinator at your institution.
In 1994/95 through 1996/97, many BC post-secondary institutions received Skills Now funds to develop programs which will improve employment outcomes for students with disabilities. For information on these programs, contact the institution.
If you are unsure of the program or institution you want and where to find it, contact the Ministry of Education, Skills and Training directly.

Colleges

Colleges offer a wide range of programs and services designed to meet the specific educational, training and retraining needs of the community. All colleges provide courses in academic, career, technical, vocational, adult basic education and continuing education fields. In addition, degree programs in fields such as education, arts, science, business, nursing, social work and child care are available through four university colleges in partnership with the provincial universities. Most colleges offer specialized programs for students with disabilities, as well as support services to assist with access to mainstream programs.

Institutes

The institutes provide specialized instruction in technologies and trades, art and design, law enforcement and public safety, and marine training. To fulfill their province-wide mandate, institutes employ a number of instructional strategies in partnerships with other institutions and agencies. Support services for students with disabilities are now available at most provincial institutions.
